On November 11, Tsinghua University (TU) officials from Beijing, China visited the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.
UP System President Alfredo E. Pascual and UP Diliman Chancellor Michael L. Tan, and Professor Herman Joseph S. Kraft welcomed TU School of Sciences Vice Dean Chen Qi, International Office Assistant Director Zhang Jian, along with other officials of TU.
The meeting aimed to “develop an academic and educational cooperation and promote mutual understanding between the two universities through collaborative activities in academic areas of mutual interest such as exchange of faculty members and students, conduct collaborative research projects, conduct lectures and symposia, exchange of academic information and materials, promotion of other academic cooperation, among others,” according to the Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities.
Among academic endeavors pointed out were student exchange programs in undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels, as well as participation in the joint symposium for the ASEAN integration summit in 2017.
Under the university’s new venture, TU aimed to renew academic partnerships with universities in Southeast Asia. After its trip to the Philippines, TU officials were also to visit universities in Malaysia and Indonesia. “We are looking at the Southeast Asia as a rising area of study that we wish to further explore and engage in,” said School of Social Sciences Vice Dean Chen Qi.
“Tsinghua University was established in 1911, with various departments from Engineering to Communication and Journalism, Humanities, Law, Medicine, Architecture, Economics, Public Policy and Management, to Interdisciplinary Information Sciences” said International Office Assistant Director Zhang Jian.
“The educational philosophy of Tsinghua is to train students with integrity. Among over 120,000 students who have graduated from Tsinghua since its founding are many outstanding scholars, eminent entrepreneurs and great statesmen remembered and respected by their fellow Chinese citizens. With the motto of Self-Discipline and Social Commitment and the spirit of Actions Speak Louder than Words, Tsinghua University is dedicated to the well-being of Chinese society and to world development,” as stated in its university mandate.
