The UP Los Baños College of Economics and Management (UPLB-CEM) celebrated its 38th Foundation Day on July 27, 2016 with a ground-breaking ceremony for a P190-million complex featuring two new four-story buildings.

To be funded by the University and the government through an appropriation facilitated by a CEM alumnus congressman, the complex will house the Economics and Management Studies Center (EMSC) and the Agricultural and Economics Development Studies Center (AEDSC).

EMSC will house the dean’s office and administrative offices, classrooms, discussions rooms, and rooms for visiting adjunct professors. AEDSC will house 60 faculty rooms and other offices and function rooms.

CEM constituents hailed the construction of their “dream buildings” as a major boost to the College objectives, which Dean Isabelita Pabuayon described as helping UPLB and UP become a globally competitive graduate, research, and public service university for national development.

The Foundation Day had the theme, “One UP for Inclusive Agribusiness Toward National Growth and Development,” with CEM Associate Dean Karen Quilloy leading the activities.

The College also marked the Foundation Day with a tribute program for UP President Alfredo Pascual, who has been a professorial lecturer at the College since June 2012, co-handling MGT 201 or Organization and Management and MGT 215 Financial Management. He was also instrumental in the grant of P90 million for the EMSC building.

The College praised his teaching for connecting students to realities of the industry and the corporate and financial world. Prof. Jimmy Williams of CEM, UPLB Graduate School Dean Jose Camacho Jr., and UPLB Chancellor Fernando Sanchez Jr. delivered testimonial messages. They enumerated the many ways the Pascual administration has supported them and facilitated the achievements of their respective units.

“I hope what we started, you continue and build upon,” Pascual said in response. Pascual talked about the joy of teaching in CEM, and emphasized the relevance of teaching among the functions of the University.
