UP researchers among ‘Philippines Promising Star’ awardees

Nine researchers from the University of the Philippines were among twelve who were recognized in The Philippines Promising Star Awards 2016. The awardees were chosen for their research works in broad fields of studies which cover social science, computer science, clinical medicine, plant and animal science, neuroscience and behavior, economics and business, molecular biology and genetics, materials science, and environment and ecology.

Among those from UP who were recognized for their world-class research are: Professor Clarissa David and Associate Professor Armand Salvador Mijares (Social Science), Associate Professor Joseph Pasia (Computer Science), Dr. Emmanuel Estrella and Dr. Maria Czarina Acelajado (Clinical Medicine), Professor Windell Rivera (Plant and Animal Science), Dr. Maria Corazon De Ungria (Molecular Biology and Genetics), Professor Menandro Acda (Materials Science) and Associate Professor Augustus Resurrecion (Environment/Ecology).

The other awardees were: De La Salle University-Manila Associate Professor Aristotle Ubando (Computer Science), University of Santo Tomas Professor Raymond Rosales (Neuroscience and Behavior), and De La Salle University-Manila Assistant Professor Krista Danielle Yu (Economics and Business).

The selection of the awardees by Thomson Reuters IP and Science business and CHED covered 13,581 research papers produced in the country from 2006 to 2015. Only 1,261 research papers which were ranked by InCitesTM to be in the top 10% of their category worldwide by citation count, were included in a short list. From the selected research studies, 46 authors, covering 17 broad subject areas, were initially identified. The final 12 were chosen for the citation impact of their scholastic studies.

Organized by Intellectual Property and Science business of Thomson Reuters, the awards were presented to the researchers at the Commission on Higher Education Research and Publication (REPUBLICA) 2016 Awarding Ceremony on 26 July 2016.

According to the Thomson Reuters ASEAN and Hong Kong, Intellectual Property and Science business Sales Director John Langton, the awards recognize “the most promising researchers in the Philippines.” The recognition is also part of their company’s efforts in working with CHED to “promote research excellence in the country.”
