The University of the Philippines College of Home Economics (UP CHE) celebrated new developments in infrastructure and technology.
On June 9th, Gusali 2 and the UP CHE official website were inaugurated, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the College complex.
In Gusali 2 will be a spacious function hall, which will accommodate both local and international conferences, as well as five large classrooms for major classes of the College’s various disciplines, according to UP CHE Dean Aurorita T. Roldan.
“The College of Home Economics belongs to the Science Cluster of UP Diliman. The College has seven sub-disciplines, namely: Clothing Technology, Community Nutrition, Family Life and Child Development, Food Science and Technology, Home Economic Education, Hotel Restaurant and Institution Management, and Interior Design. All these disciplines have laboratories, three of which have become icons in the University, which are the UP Child Development Center, the Pilot Food Plant and the Tearoom,” according to Dean Roldan.
The construction of the CHE Complex Phase I, projected to be turned over on May 31, 2017, is done by ABE Builders. It will also build the new Museo and the Department of Family Life and Child Development, including the UP Child Development Center. The infrastructure developments at the UP CHE are managed by the Office of the Campus Architect, headed by its director, Arch. Enrico B. Tabafunda.

Pascual lauded the success of the new developments at the College, which “creates a living and enabling environment, also giving focus not only on the infrastructural improvements but as well as the human capital by strengthening the production of post graduate degree holders and experts of the various CHE disciplines.”
“These developments greatly contribute to the strengthening of the College and more importantly in upholding the University’s mandate in delivering not only teaching and research, but also public service.”
UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan likewise expressed his gratitude to the College for “its continuing reinvention, which reflects a good representation and model for other Colleges both in and outside the UP System.”
The UP CHE website was also formally launched at the College’s Tearoom with Prof. Nica Marie Argañosa as the presentor. The official website may be viewed at www.che-up.com.
Special musical numbers were presented at the inauguration and groundbreaking ceremonies, by the UP Singing Ambassadors led by its conductor, Prof. Ed Manguiat, an alumnus of the college.
Gracing the inauguration and groundbreaking ceremony were UP officials, including President Alfredo Pascual, UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan, UP Alumni Association representative Evie Escudero, College of Science Dean Jose Maria Balmaceda and UP Regent Georgina Encanto.
