
Several UP constituent universities also land in the top 100

The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman leads 229 other universities in the latest EduRank rankings of Philippine universities. Released on February 29, 2024, the latest assessment shows the Quezon City-based constituent university (CU) of the UP System to be the top higher education institution in terms of research works in fields such as Environmental Science, Engineering, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Liberal Arts, and Social Sciences.
Several of the UP System’s other CUs are also listed among the top 100 universities in the Philippines. UP Los Baños secured the 5th spot, followed by UP Manila at 6th, and UP Visayas at 11th. Meanwhile, UP Baguio is at the 28th spot, with UP Mindanao at 48th.
Based on an analysis of at least 500,000 citations from at least 58,000 academic publications, the EduRank rankings also take into consideration the prominence of a university’s alumni, as well as its reference database. According to EduRank, 45% of the ranking is from the university’s research performance, while another 45% is from its non-academic performance. The remaining 10% is from the prominence of the higher education institution’s alumni.

According to EduRank, UP Diliman published 8,902 scientific papers, which were cited 91,432 times by researchers and institutions in other research and academic works. The rankings body placed UPD as the 374th out of 5,830 higher education institutions in Asia. Globally, it is the 1,367th university out of 14,131 higher educational institutions worldwide.
UP Diliman is the top university in the country in terms of research works in Wildlife and Fisheries Management and Conservation, Hydrology and Water Resource Management, Oceanography, Earth Science and Geophysics, Geology, Urban and Regional Planning, Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Electronic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Microbiology, Genetics, Theoretical Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Broadcast Journalism, Media Studies, Public Policy or Administration, Archaeology, History, and Political Science, to name a few.

UP Los Baños on the other hand published 4,522 papers, which were cited 60,629 times in other research works. EduRank rated UPLB as the top school in the country for research in Forestry, Horticulture, Entomology, Agricultural Science, Toxicology, Animal Science, Zoology, Nutrition and Food Science, as well as Botany.
Aside from being ranked 5th in the country, EduRank also ranks UPLB as the 869th university in Asia, and the 2,761st higher education institution in the world. It also ranks 340th out 1,031 institutions in Agricultural Engineering, and the 590th of 2,377 in Forestry.
UP Manila, the UP System’s Health Sciences Center, produced a total of 4,803 scientific papers, which were cited 78,551 times in other research works. Leading other universities in the country in Medicine studies, it is also the top school for research in its fields, such as Neurosurgery, Epidemiology, Pediatrics, Health Management, Optometry, Family Medicine, Surgery, Dermatology, Immunology, Pathology, Oncology and Cancer Research, Dentistry and Physical Therapy.
Beyond Medicine and its Allied Professions, UP Manila also leads other universities in the country with research works on Occupational Safety and Health, Demography, Psychiatry, and Neuroscience.

Ranked 11th in the country, the University of the Philippines Visayas produced a total of 857 research papers, which were cited 7,694 times in other scholarly works. The constituent university, which has campuses in both Western and Eastern Visayas, is ranked 1970th in Asia out of 5,830 institutions, and 5398th in the world out of 14,131 universities and colleges.
Landing at the 28th spot, the University of the Philippines Baguio was assessed by EduRank to have produced 398 research works, which were cited 2,677 times. UPB is ranked 2,460th in Asia, and 6,494th in the world in terms of research outputs, citations, and prominence of its own alumni.
The UP System’s lone constituent university in Mindanao lands in the 48th spot out of 229 universities in the country. According to EduRank, UP Mindanao has produced a total of 292 research papers, which were cited by 2,138 scholarly works and academic institutions. UP Min ranks 2,837th in Asia and 7,276th in the world.
Mandated by Republic Act 9500 or the UP Charter, the UP System’s eight constituent universities and lone autonomous college, spread over 17 campuses all over the country, continue to fulfill the national university’s distinctive leadership in education, research, and public service. The recent rankings by EduRank only gives proof of UP’s service to the nation.
